2027 Volvo XC60 and XC90 PHEVs Gain Huge 41kWh Batteries: Up to 200km Range Confirmed for Australia

Volvo Car Australia has confirmed an extensive mid-cycle overhaul for its electrification backbone, equipping both the 2027 Volvo XC60 mid-size SUV and the three-row XC90 large SUV with a massive 41.2kWh plug-in hybrid (PHEV) battery system. Local showroom arrivals are scheduled for the second quarter (April to June) of 2027.  

Crucially for Australian supply and provenance, Volvo Car Australia has confirmed that Australian-delivered XC60 models will now be sourced directly from Sweden—moving production away from China to join the Swedish-built XC90.

EV-Sized Batteries and Real-World Range Logic

The defining technical change across both models is the ditching of the previous 18.8kWh (14.9kWh usable) battery pack in favour of a large 41.2kWh unit (37.9kWh usable) packaged under the floor of Volvo’s SPA1 platform.

At over 41kWh, this battery is comparable in capacity to entry-level pure electric vehicles, more than doubling previous electric range thresholds:

• Volvo XC60 T6 AWD: Up to 200km of WLTP electric range.
• Volvo XC60 T8 AWD: Up to 189km of WLTP electric range (up from 89km).
• Volvo XC90 T8 AWD: 164km of WLTP electric range (up from 77km).

For local high-intent buyers, these ratings substantially surpass competing luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e (107km WLTP) and the BMW X5 xDrive50e (102km WLTP). However, real-world highway touring in regional Australian conditions will draw on petrol reserves once the pack is depleted, making the vehicle's dual-power capability vital for long-distance drivers.

Both plug-in variants will continue to be sold alongside the entry-level mild-hybrid B5 turbo-petrol, catering to buyers who prefer a lower purchase price and do not want to plug in.

Volvo Car Australia has not yet confirmed official dollar pricing or detailed variant grades for the upgraded long-range lineup. Final specifications and pricing will be released closer to the Q2 2027 market launch, where they are expected to be designated as MY27.5 or MY28 models.
