The announcement marks a strategic shift for Ford Australia, which currently relies on the Ranger ute and Everest SUV for roughly 90 per cent of its total sales volume.

Ford Australia has officially confirmed it will expand its local lineup beyond the Ranger and Everest, announcing the 2027 Ford Bronco Basecamp. Set to arrive in local showrooms in the second half of 2027, the adventure-focused SUV introduces an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain to the brand's portfolio.

Despite sharing the iconic 'Bronco' name, muscular proportions, and illuminated grille lettering with the rugged Bronco sold in the US, the Bronco Basecamp is a completely different vehicle. While the traditional Bronco rides on a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis (like the Everest), the Bronco Basecamp utilizes a car-like monocoque construction. Furthermore, it will be the second model in Ford Australia’s pipeline to be manufactured in China by Ford’s joint-venture partner, Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC).

The Powertrain: What is an EREV?

Ford bills the Bronco Basecamp as a "super-hybrid", but technically, it is an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV).

Unlike a conventional Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) where the petrol engine can directly drive the wheels, an EREV operates essentially as a pure electric vehicle. The Bronco Basecamp is driven exclusively by two electric motors (providing all-wheel drive), while a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine acts solely as an onboard generator to recharge the battery on the move.

While official Australian power outputs are yet to be finalized, the Chinese-market equivalent produces a potent 310kW of power and 600Nm of torque, yielding a claimed 0–100km/h sprint of 5.8 seconds.

For the Australian market, Ford has confirmed it will upgrade the vehicle’s battery to a 49.9kWh usable capacity (replacing the 43.7kWh LFP pack used in China). With a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol, Ford expects a total combined WLTP driving range of between 800km and 900km. A 30 to 80 per cent DC fast charge takes approximately 27 minutes.

The "Basecamp" Identity: Tailored for the Outdoors

True to its name, the Bronco Basecamp leans heavily into the overlanding and camping lifestyle. Measuring 5,025mm long and 1,960mm wide, it features a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link independent rear suspension, offering 220mm of ground clearance and a 600mm wading depth.

Ford Australia confirmed the top-spec Outer Banks model will feature heavily in the lineup, introducing several unique camping-focused amenities:

  • Electric Pop-Up Lift Roof: Increases interior headroom for camping and maximizes air circulation at the touch of a button.
  • Cabin Sleep Conversion: The five seats fold completely flat to accommodate a custom-fit inflatable mattress, creating a secure sleeping cabin without needing to empty the boot.
  • Wild Kitchen: A fold-down table integrated into the side-hinged rear tailgate to organize cooking gear.
  • Thermal Storage Console: A built-in 7.5-litre console capable of heating or cooling drinks and snacks.
  • Pro Power Onboard (V2L): Pushing out a maximum of 6.6kW, the vehicle can power heavy-duty campsite appliances like induction cooktops, coffee machines, and lighting directly from the 49.9kWh battery.

Inside the cabin, Australian media were shown a prototype featuring synthetic leather upholstery, a digital instrument cluster, a massive 15.6-inch central touchscreen, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Front and rear mechanical differential locks are also expected to feature on flagship models.

Expected 2027 Australian Pricing Context

Ford Australia has not yet confirmed local pricing for the Bronco Basecamp ahead of its H2 2027 launch.

However, looking at the Chinese domestic market provides a clue to its positioning. In China, the Bronco New Energy range starts at ¥229,800 RMB (about A$47,565). While Australian retail pricing will be higher once shipping, local suspension tuning, and taxes are factored in, it suggests the Basecamp will be aggressively priced against conventional PHEV off-roaders like the GWM Tank 500 Ultra Hi4-T ($79,990 drive-away).
