2027 BYD M9 PHEV Detailed for Australia: Plug-in People Mover Priced from $61,990 to Challenge Kia Carnival

BYD Australia has officially confirmed local pricing and initial specifications for its all-new plug-in hybrid people mover, the 2027 BYD M9. Arriving in Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026 (October to December).

While earlier Chinese luxury people movers—such as BYD’s own all-electric Denza D9 ($85,990 plus on-roads)—targeted high-end VIP shuttles like the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, the M9 takes direct aim at Australia’s family benchmark, the Kia Carnival.

The Carnival dominates the local people-mover market, commanding more than three out of every four sales in the category. Priced between $56,310 (base S) and $76,840 (flagship GT-Line) plus on-roads, the Carnival Hybrid now faces its first dedicated plug-in hybrid rival capable of providing a genuine 145km of zero-emission daily electric commuting.

Powertrain Breakdown: Fifth-Generation DM-i Super Hybrid

Both M9 variants are front-wheel drive (FWD) and utilize BYD’s latest DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric drive motor:

• M9 Dynamic Eight-Seat ($61,990): Houses a 20.39kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Blade battery. Australian certification documents confirm a total system output of 191.4kW. Chinese technical filings indicate DC fast-charging up to 41kW.
• M9 Premium Seven-Seat ($72,990): Upgrades to a larger 36.6kWh Blade battery pack, delivering combined system outputs of 218kW and 315Nm. It achieves an official WLTP electric-only driving range of 145km, with a full petrol-electric range rated up to 850km. Peak DC fast-charging supports up to 73kW.

Dimensions & Practical Packaging vs Kia Carnival

Dimensionally, the M9 measures 5145mm long, 1970mm wide, and 1805mm tall, riding on a 3045mm wheelbase.

Compared directly with the Kia Carnival, the M9 is 10mm shorter, 25mm narrower, and 30mm taller, sitting on a 45mm shorter wheelbase.

• Cargo & Payload: Luggage capacity behind the deployed third row is rated at 470 litres. Local compliance documents confirm an identical 654kg payload rating for both variants.
• Towing Capability: Braked towing capacity is rated at 1,500kg, trailing traditional diesel haulers but sufficient for light recreational trailers.
