2027 BMW X5 Detailed for Australia: 5th-Gen Luxury SUV Adopts Neue Klasse Tech, Launch Q4 2026 in Australia

BMW Australia has officially announced pricing and initial local specifications for the landmark fifth-generation 2027 BMW X5. Arriving in Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026 (October to December), the launch portfolio focuses exclusively on two upgraded six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrains: the diesel-powered 40d xDrive and the petrol-powered 40 xDrive.

The X5 holds exceptional commercial significance for the Bavarian marque locally. Since pioneering the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment in 1999, more than 3.1 million X5s have been sold worldwide, with over 80,000 delivered to Australian owners. In 2025 alone, local deliveries reached 3,673 units, making it BMW Australia’s third best-selling model behind only the smaller X1 and X3.

Despite substantial technological leaps and added standard luxury equipment, BMW has implemented a remarkably restrained pricing adjustment. Both launch models will be followed in the first quarter of 2027 by the first-ever all-electric iX5 and the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid.

Powertrain Breakdown: Upgraded Six-Cylinder 48V Mild Hybrids

Both launch variants utilize refined 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engines paired with a second-generation 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

An electric motor generating 13kW and 200Nm is housed directly inside the eight-speed automatic transmission, powered by a compact 0.9kWh lithium-ion battery to smooth stop-start transitions and bolster low-end torque response:

• X5 40d xDrive (Turbo-Diesel): Delivers 230kW of power and 670Nm of torque (up 20kW and 20Nm over the old 30d). It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds, carrying a kerb weight of 2,430kg with a 75-litre fuel tank.
• X5 40 xDrive (Turbo-Petrol): Produces 294kW of power and 540Nm of torque (gaining 14kW and 20Nm over the previous 40i). The 0–100km/h sprint is dispatched in 5.3 seconds. Kerb weight stands at 2,365kg, paired with an 83-litre fuel capacity and claimed fuel economy of 8.6–9.3L/100km.

Buyers planning to tow heavy caravans or horse floats should note that standard factory models carry a 3,000kg braked towing capacity. Unlocking the maximum 3,500kg towing rating (with 350kg downball weight) requires selecting the optional Trailer Tow Hitch Preparation for $2,500. Ticking this box deletes the hands-free contactless tailgate kick-sensor.

Design & Digital Architecture: Neue Klasse Panoramic Vision

The fifth-generation X5 adopts BMW’s monolithic Neue Klasse design language, featuring taller, narrower kidney grilles and distinctive double-X adaptive LED lighting signatures.

Dimensionally, the SUV has expanded to 4998mm in length (+76mm), 2000mm in width (2216mm with mirrors), and 1751mm in height, riding on an elongated 3035mm wheelbase. Cargo volume is rated at 655 litres, expanding to 1850 litres with the 40:20:40 rear seats folded.

Inside the Digital Sanctuary

The cabin introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive running Operating System X:

• BMW Panoramic Vision: A full-width projection display running across the lower edge of the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar, complemented by a 3D Head-Up Display.
• Massive Displays: A central floating touchscreen enlarged to 17.9 inches (up from 14.9 inches), teamed with a standard BMW Passenger Screen integrated ahead of the front occupant for media streaming and travel apps.
• Standard Luxury Spec: Both models feature the M Sport package as standard, 21-inch alloy wheels, Adaptive M suspension, a panoramic glass sunroof, soft-close doors, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system, and multi-functional front seats with heating, electric lumbar, active ventilation, and pneumatic massage.
