The move to offer both front- and rear-wheel-drive configurations mirrors the strategy seen on rivals like the BYD Atto 3 Evo, where entry-level grades retain a front-mounted motor and premium grades transition to higher-output rear-wheel drive.

Technical specifications for the updated 2027 Geely EX5 (marketed in China as the Geely Galaxy E5) have officially emerged, headlined by a major architectural split: new rear-wheel-drive variants built on an 800-volt platform will join existing 400-volt front-wheel-drive models.

While Australian arrival timing for the updated model has yet to be formally confirmed by Geely Australia, the EX5 has already established a significant footprint locally. To the end of August 2026, Geely delivered 10,737 units of the mid-size electric SUV in Australia, making it one of the country's best-selling electric vehicles alongside established nameplates like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, and Leapmotor C10.

Dual Architectures: 400V FWD vs 800V RWD

The updated EX5 lineup diverges into two distinct mechanical configurations:

  • Entry-Level 400V FWD: Retains a front-mounted electric motor delivering 160kW of power and 320Nm of torque, completing the 0–100km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds. Paired with a 60.22kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, it supports DC charging up to 120kW and delivers 530km of range under the lenient CLTC testing cycle (or roughly 429km on the WLTP standard). In Australia, current models are fitted with a 68.39kWh pack providing 450–475km of WLTP range.

  • Flagship 800V RWD: Moves the drive motor to the rear axle, increasing outputs to 245kW and 320Nm for a 0–100km/h sprint of between 5.8 and 6.2 seconds. It utilizes Geely's 'Gold Brick' LFP batteries, available in 61.52kWh and 70.01kWh capacities. CLTC ranges are rated at 550km and 635km (with WLTP ratings listed at 446km and 514km respectively).

Thanks to the 800V electrical architecture, the flagship battery supports extreme DC fast-charging rates up to 460kW. Operating at '6C' charge rates, the system can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in an estimated 10 to 12 minutes under optimal conditions. AC charging remains capped at 6.6kW across the board.

Underneath the body, updated 800V variants upgrade from a four-link independent rear suspension to a more sophisticated five-link setup, with adaptive dampers newly available.

Exterior and Dimension Revisions

Aesthetic updates include a restyled, sharper front bumper with larger vertical air ducts and matte chrome trim. Crucially, the EX5 moves away from flush pop-out door handles to traditional pull-style handles to comply with revised Chinese safety regulations. The rear gains prominent 'Geely' lettering across the tailgate, while 19-inch alloy wheels become available.

The revised dimensions see overall length stretch by 15mm to 4,630mm, width increase by 19mm to 1,920mm, and the wheelbase shorten slightly by 5mm to 2,745mm compared to the current Australian-delivered version. Main boot space with the rear seats folded drops slightly from 1,877L to 1,838L, but the update compensates by introducing a large 160-litre storage compartment under the bonnet (frunk).

Australian Availability and Pricing

Geely Australia has not yet announced official release dates or pricing for the updated EX5 range. Currently, local showrooms offer the existing 400V front-wheel-drive EX5 equipped with the 68.39kWh battery.

Further local specifications, timing, and pricing details will be confirmed once Geely Australia finalizes its rollout schedule for the 800V RWD updates.
