GWM has officially expanded its electrified ute lineup in Australia, confirming pricing and specifications for the 2027 Cannon Hi4-T plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

Powertrain and Real-World Range Expectations

Under the skin, the Cannon Hi4-T is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a single electric motor and a substantial 33.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. This hybrid setup delivers a combined system output of 310kW of power and 750Nm of torque, channelled through a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission to a mechanical four-wheel-drive system.

GWM claims a combined fuel consumption of just 2.4L/100km and a maximum electric-only driving range of 115km. However, prospective buyers should note that this electric range figure is based on the older, more lenient NEDC testing standard; real-world electric range on Australian roads is expected to be lower. For long-distance touring, the manufacturer states the ute can travel up to 1,037km on a single tank and a full charge. When recharging is required, the battery supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 110kW, allowing a 30 to 80 per cent charge in approximately 18 minutes.

Payload, Towing, and Dimensions

Crucially for the Australian ute segment, the Cannon Hi4-T retains the benchmark 3,500kg braked towing capacity. Stripping away the marketing claims, the official weight figures reveal a kerb weight of 2,585kg for both the Lux and Ultra variants, which leaves a payload capacity of 835kg. The Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is rated at 3,420kg, while the Gross Combined Mass (GCM) sits at 6,400kg.

For off-grid utility, the Cannon Hi4-T comes standard with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. This includes 230V power outlets in the tub capable of discharging up to 6kW of power, suitable for running heavy-duty tools on a worksite or appliances at a campsite. The vehicle also features a low-range transfer case and five all-terrain drive modes to support its genuine off-road capability.

Tech and Equipment Grades

The interior of the Cannon Hi4-T debuts a new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by GWM's Coffee OS, paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range.

The entry-level Lux grade includes synthetic leather upholstery, a wireless phone charger, powered driver's seat adjustment, and a full suite of safety tech including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and blind-spot monitoring. Upgrading to the Ultra grade adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an electronic sunroof, front parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view monitor.

The Cannon Hi4-T Lux officially starts at $50,990 drive-away for private buyers, making it the cheapest PHEV ute currently available in Australia. For context, its closest market rival, the JAC Hunter PHEV, carries an estimated drive-away price of $53,905 for NSW buyers.

To stimulate early adoption, GWM is offering an aggressive launch promotion for vehicles delivered by October 31, 2026. Buyers can opt for either a $2,000 drive-away bonus (which reduces the purchase price) or a $2,000 fuel card. This discount drops the effective entry price of the Lux to $48,990 drive-away for private buyers, or just $47,990 drive-away for ABN holders.
