Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed that while the model has debuted globally, local showroom arrival is yet to be locked in.

Mercedes-AMG has officially expanded the second-generation lineup of its flagship performance electric sedan with the unveiling of the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupé. Slotting in beneath the previously revealed, multi-motor GT55 and GT63 hyper-EVs, the new GT53 arrives as the entry-level variant, trading stratospheric power figures for the longest driving range in the GT family.

Powertrain Breakdown: Dual Motors and Realistic Acceleration

Unlike its higher-tier tri-motor siblings, the GT53 is driven by a dual-motor electric all-wheel-drive setup—featuring a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) on each axle.

The powertrain produces a maximum combined peak output of 400kW (544hp) and 800Nm of torque, with continuous operating output rated at 270kW. This represents a significant step down from the monstrous outputs of the GT55 (600kW/1800Nm) and the flagship GT63 (860kW/2000Nm).

While initial press communications highlight a 3.5-second sprint using a one-foot rollout allowance, the GT53’s true standstill-to-100km/h acceleration is officially verified at 3.9 seconds. Maximum top speed is electronically governed at 230km/h, which can be raised to 250km/h via the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

Notably, Mercedes-Benz confirmed following the vehicle's debut that the entry-level GT53 does not feature mechanical torque vectoring. Power delivery is instead managed via a two-speed rear transmission with an 11:1 first-gear ratio for low-speed urban launch and a taller 5:1 second gear for highway efficiency, while the front axle motor automatically decouples during low-load driving to reduce drag.

Benchmark 800V Battery Tech and Massive 809km Range

The true advantage of the GT53 lies in its touring efficiency. Utilizing the same 106kWh usable capacity high-voltage battery as its stablemates, the reduced power draw allows the GT53 to deliver an exceptional WLTP-certified driving range of between 682km and 809km depending on wheel and aerodynamic specifications. By comparison, the more powerful GT55 caps out at 700km, while the GT63 achieves a maximum of 696km.

Underpinned by an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture with directly oil-cooled cylindrical battery cells, the vehicle supports monumental DC fast-charging rates of up to 600kW:

  • 10-Minute Top-Up: Adds more than 534km of driving range in optimal conditions.
  • 10 to 80% Recharge: Completed in just 11 minutes.
  • Voltage Flexibility: The charging system automatically converts to 400V mode when connecting to older public DC charging infrastructure.

Acoustic Engineering: Digitising the Inline-Six

To bridge the sensory gap between internal combustion heritage and electrification, Mercedes-AMG acoustic engineers developed a custom acoustic profile for the GT53.

Rather than using purely artificial synthesizer noise, engineers conducted extensive chassis dynamometer recordings using 16 microphones placed inside and outside the previous Mercedes-AMG E53 Coupé to digitally recreate the authentic exhaust note of an AMG turbocharged inline-six engine.

When driving in the AMGFORCE Sport+ program, the vehicle pipes this six-cylinder soundtrack through interior and exterior speakers while using physical power delivery cuts to simulate the distinct shift interruptions of a traditional mechanical gearbox—operable manually via steering-wheel shift paddles.

Dimensions and Driver-Centric Cockpit

Built on a lower, wider footprint, the new GT 4-Door Coupé measures 5094mm long, 1959mm wide, and 1411mm tall on an extended 3040mm wheelbase. Despite carrying a heavy under-floor battery that brings DIN kerb weight to 2375kg, the vehicle sits 42mm lower than its combustion-powered predecessor, boasting a highly aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd supported by an active AEROKINETICS rear spoiler and deployable rear diffuser.

Inside, the cabin features a low-slung GT layout with standard rear bucket seats and a Sky Control panoramic glass roof featuring electrochromatic opacity adjustments. Telemetry and infotainment are managed via a 10.2-inch digital driver cluster and an ergonomically angled 14-inch central touchscreen, complemented by a dedicated 'Response Control' rotary dial on the centre console that allows drivers to independently fine-tune throttle sensitivity.
