BYD Sealion 5 becomes Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid SUV for 2026

Available to order now and due to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2026, the mid-size Sealion 5 opens at $33,990 before on-road costs, placing it well below comparable hybrid SUVs from Chery and Geely.

With this move, BYD has effectively filled a pricing gap that previously barely existed in Australia’s PHEV segment — offering electrified driving at a price point that competes directly with petrol-only family SUVs.

Where the Sealion 5 fits in BYD’s range

The Sealion 5 sits just below the Sealion 6 in BYD’s local SUV lineup. While the two models are similar in size, the Sealion 5 is slightly shorter and narrower, and significantly cheaper — by around $9000 at entry level.

Although it’s new to Australia, the Sealion 5 is based on the BYD Song Pro, a model that has been on sale overseas since 2019 and updated over time to meet current standards.

The launch forms part of a broader BYD rollout in Australia, which also includes the electric Atto 1, Atto 2, and the larger, three-row Sealion 8 PHEV.

Pricing: two grades, both under $40k

At these prices, the Sealion 5 undercuts the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid and Geely Starray EM-i, making it the lowest-priced plug-in hybrid currently on sale in Australia.

Plug-in hybrid system and efficiency

Both variants use BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, pairing a petrol engine with an electric motor driving the front wheels.

The setup prioritises efficiency and everyday usability rather than outright performance, with electric assistance doing much of the work in urban driving.

Powertrain comparison

The key difference between the two grades is battery size.

Both versions support AC charging at up to 3.3kW, with no DC fast-charging capability.

Size and practicality

On paper, the Sealion 5 lands squarely in the heart of the mid-size SUV segment.

It’s comparable in length to vehicles like the Mitsubishi Outlander, but is strictly a five-seat SUV, rather than offering a third row.

Dimensions

Boot space is competitive for the class, making the Sealion 5 suitable for families upgrading from smaller SUVs or hatchbacks.

Warranty, servicing and ownership

BYD Australia has not yet confirmed servicing costs for the Sealion 5, though other BYD models typically follow 12-month or 20,000km service intervals with capped-price servicing.

Warranty coverage matches the rest of BYD’s passenger car range:

• 8 years / 160,000km battery warranty
• 8 years / 150,000km drive unit warranty

Roadside assistance is included initially and can be extended when servicing within the BYD network.

Safety: well equipped, rating still pending

The Sealion 5 has not yet been tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP, though it comes with a strong list of standard safety technology.
