- Annoying Safety Tech

The Australian dual-cab ute market is an absolute battleground. Dominant heavyweights like the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Isuzu D-MAX grab all the headlines. Meanwhile, aggressive new entries like the BYD Shark 6 and Kia Tasman are completely shaking up the established order. So, where exactly does the all-new 2026 Nissan Navara fit into this chaotic mix? Since the launch of this new generation (the D27), sales haven't exactly been setting the charts on fire. The harsh reality is that this Navara shares its fundamental DNA with the new Mitsubishi Triton. It is essentially a re-skinned, re-engineered version of its corporate cousin.
But writing the Navara off as just a "fancy Triton" is a big mistake. Nissan has actually put some serious, localized effort into making this ute suitable for Aussie conditions. They brought in the local engineering wizards at Premcar to soften and refine the front suspension setup. They have also tweaked the styling, opting for a clean, handsome look that nods back to the classic 1980s D21 Navara. However, the price has definitely crept up. The ST-X grade we are testing sits just under the flagship Pro-4X, bringing full-time 4WD and a ton of creature comforts to the table.
Is this updated Nissan Navara actually worth your hard-earned cash? Or are you better off jumping into a Ranger or one of the high-tech Chinese newcomers? In this comprehensive YEECAR 3.0 review, we break down the pricing, the real-world fuel economy, the controversial switch back to leaf springs, and what it’s actually like to live with every day. Let’s get into the details.

HOW MUCH DOES THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X COST?
Let’s talk money. Buying a dual-cab ute is no longer a cheap exercise, and the new Navara is no exception. Pricing has crept up noticeably across the entire lineup compared to the outgoing generation. Nissan has structured the range to cover everyone from tradies needing a basic workhorse to families wanting a lifestyle tourer.
| Model Variant | Transmission & Drive Type | Price (Before On-Road Costs) |
| 2026 Nissan Navara SL | 6-Speed Auto / 4x4 | $53,348 |
| 2026 Nissan Navara ST | 6-Speed Auto / 4x4 | $56,765 |
| 2026 Nissan Navara ST-X | 6-Speed Auto / 4x4 | $63,177 |
| 2026 Nissan Navara Pro-4X | 6-Speed Auto / 4x4 | $68,418 |
The entry-level Navara SL kicks off at $53,348 before on-road costs. This is your rugged, no-nonsense work truck. It comes with 17-inch steel wheels, basic black exterior trim, and a very utilitarian cabin. It’s perfect for the job site, but maybe a bit too basic for family duties. Stepping up to the Navara ST ($56,765) adds some much-needed creature comforts. You get silver alloy wheels, side steps, a polished sports bar, and built-in satellite navigation. For many buyers on a strict budget, this is a decent middle ground.
However, the Navara ST-X we are testing here is arguably the smartest buy in the range. Priced at $63,177 before on-road costs, it represents a significant financial jump. But you gain crucial upgrades that completely change how the ute drives and feels. The biggest addition is the full-time 4WD system, which gives you incredible grip on wet, sealed roads. You also get leather-accented upholstery, heated front seats, a drop-in tub liner, and dual-zone climate control. It turns the Navara from a basic truck into a genuinely comfortable daily driver.
At the top of the tree sits the Navara Pro-4X ($68,418). This grade is aimed directly at the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Toyota HiLux Rogue. It adds aggressive styling elements like a red-accented grille, black wheel- arch flares, a factory tow bar, and bespoke off-road aesthetics. If you want maximum street presence, this is the one to get. But from a pure value perspective, the ST-X gives you all the mechanical benefits for about $5,000 less.

WHAT IS THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X LIKE ON THE INSIDE INCLUDING DIMENSION?
Jump inside the Navara ST-X, and you will notice a massive shift in design philosophy. If you are expecting the hyper-futuristic, screen-heavy dashboard of a BYD Shark 6 or a Kia Tasman, you might be slightly underwhelmed. Nissan has kept things incredibly traditional. It is a very clean, simple, and functional layout. For a lot of buyers who hate diving through touchscreens just to change the fan speed, this simple approach is a massive breath of fresh air.
The build quality feels solid and durable. When you shut the door, it closes with a heavy, reassuring thud. The ST-X benefits from plenty of soft-touch padding right where you need it most. Your elbows rest on plush surfaces on the door cards and the centre console. Sure, you will find hard, scratchy plastics lower down in the footwells, but that is perfectly normal for a dual-cab ute built for muddy boots.

The seats in the ST-X are very comfortable. They are trimmed in leather-accented upholstery and provide great lateral support. The driver gets an electrically adjustable seat with power lumbar support, which is brilliant for long days behind the wheel. Curiously, the front passenger only gets manual seat adjustment. Both front seats are heated, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel offers both tilt and reach adjustment, making it easy to lock in a perfect driving position.
The tech setup is decent, though not class-leading. You get a responsive 9.0-inch central touchscreen. It features wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and an inbuilt navigation system with 3D mapping. The menus are basic, but that makes them very easy to navigate while driving. There is also a traditional analogue gauge cluster for the driver, paired with a small 7.0-inch digital screen in the middle. It does the job perfectly well, even if it lacks the wow factor of a fully digital dashboard.

Dimensions and Practicality
Size-wise, the new Navara has grown. It feels like a proper, full-sized ute on the road, sharing its robust underlying ladder-frame chassis with the Mitsubishi Triton.
| Dimension Metric | 2026 Nissan Navara Specification |
| Overall Exterior Length | 5320mm |
| Overall Exterior Width (excl. mirrors) | 1865mm (1930mm on Pro-4X) |
| Overall Exterior Height | 1795mm (1815mm on Pro-4X) |
| Wheelbase | 3130mm |
| Tub Length x Width | 1555mm x 1545mm |
| Tub Width Between Arches | 1135mm |
| Ground Clearance | 228mm |

In the second row, space is decent but not exceptional. Knee room and headroom are perfectly fine for average-sized adults. However, toe room under the front seats is a little bit tight. If you try to squeeze three big blokes across the back bench, shoulder room will definitely be a squeeze. Rear passengers do get some nice amenities, though. There are directional air vents, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, and a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders. The rear doors open wide, making it fairly easy to load kids into car seats. You get two ISOFIX anchor points on the window seats and a central top-tether point.
Moving to the tub, the ST-X shines with everyday practicality. It features a lockable tailgate that is super easy to open and close thanks to integrated gas struts. Nissan includes a tough, drop-in plastic tub liner from the factory on this grade, preventing scratches and dents. You also get four heavy-duty tie-down hooks. However, it is a bit disappointing that there is no standard LED tub lighting or a factory roller shutter. If you want a hard lid or a tonneau cover, you will have to dig into the expensive accessories catalogue.

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET?
The powertrain is the biggest talking point of this new generation. Nissan has completely ditched the old 2.3- litre engine. Under the bonnet, the 2026 Navara utilizes a 2.4-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine. Yes, it is the exact same engine found in the new Mitsubishi Triton. But in this application, it works very well.
| Powertrain Specification | 2026 Nissan Navara 4x4 |
| Engine Architecture | 2.4L Bi-Turbo 4-Cylinder Diesel |
| Peak Power Output | 150kW @ 3500rpm |
| Peak Torque Output | 470Nm @ 1500rpm |
| Transmission | 6-Speed Automatic |
| Drive Configuration | Four-Wheel Drive (Full-Time on ST-X / Pro-4X) |
| Kerb Weight (ST-X) | 2171kg |
| Payload Capacity (ST-X) | 1019kg |
| Braked Towing Capacity | 3500kg |
| Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) | 3190kg |
| Gross Combination Mass (GCM) | 6250kg |

The bi-turbo diesel pumps out 150kW of power and 470Nm of torque. The torque curve is excellent, delivering maximum pulling power from a very low 1500rpm. This low-down grunt is absolutely brilliant for towing heavy trailers or crawling up steep off-road tracks. The engine is mated exclusively to a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. While it doesn't have the fancy 10-speed unit found in the Ford Ranger, the six-speed gearbox is proven, robust, and rarely hunts for the wrong gear.
The most important mechanical upgrade on the ST-X is the four-wheel-drive system. Lower grades (SL and ST) use a basic part-time 4WD system. This means you can only use 4WD on dirt or gravel. But the ST-X and Pro-4X get a highly advanced full-time 4WD system. This allows you to leave the car in "4H" on wet bitumen, providing incredible safety and grip during heavy rain without causing mechanical damage to the drivetrain. It is a massive selling point for family buyers.

HOW DOES THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X DRIVE?
When you hit the road, the new Navara feels distinctly different from the Triton it is based on. Nissan has poured significant engineering effort into localizing the ride quality.
Urban Commuting and Ride Quality
Around town, the Navara handles broken roads very well. Nissan hired the local tuning experts at Premcar to develop a bespoke front suspension tune for the Australian market. They made the front end noticeably softer and more compliant than the Triton. When you hit a speed bump or a nasty pothole, the Navara absorbs the impact with impressive maturity. It doesn't bounce around aggressively when the tub is completely empty.
Interestingly, Nissan has moved away from the coil-sprung rear suspension of the previous generation. This new model reverts to traditional heavy-duty leaf springs at the back. This change drastically improves load- carrying stability. If you throw 500kg of tools in the tray, the rear end no longer sags or feels floaty. The trade- off is a slightly firmer ride in the back seats when the ute is unladen, but it is a sacrifice most tradies will happily accept.
Engine Refinement and Highway Cruising
While the suspension is excellent, the engine refinement is a definite weak point. The 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel is very noisy. Under heavy acceleration, it produces a loud, coarse, groaning noise that permeates the cabin. It sounds like a diesel engine from five or ten years ago. It simply cannot match the buttery-smooth refinement of the V6 Ford Ranger or the quiet operation of the Kia Tasman. However, once you settle into a steady 110km/h highway cruise, the engine noise fades into the background, though you will still notice some mild wind flutter around the large wing mirrors.
Performance-wise, it is punchy and responsive. The 470Nm of torque gets the 2.1-tonne ute moving effortlessly off the line. The six-speed auto shifts smoothly, never rushing to upshift too early. Braking performance, however, is average. The Navara still uses a drum brake setup on the rear axle. While perfectly adequate for daily driving, rear disc brakes (as seen on the Ranger and HiLux Rogue) provide much more stopping confidence when towing heavy loads down steep hills.

Off-Road Capability
Take the Navara off the beaten path, and it feels absolutely unstoppable. The ST-X comes loaded with off-road hardware. You get a selectable rear differential lock, hill descent control, and a massive 228mm of ground clearance. The approach angle is a steep 30.4 degrees, meaning you rarely scrape the front bumper on rocky climbs.
The vehicle features dedicated off-road drive modes, including Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. Engaging four-wheel-drive low-range (4LLc) and selecting 'Rock' mode transforms the ute. It expertly limits wheel slip and maintains steady momentum over deeply rutted tracks. The steering, while light and easy around town, provides enough feedback in the bush to let you know exactly where the front tyres are pointing.

WHAT ARE THE STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR EACH VARIANT?
Nissan has structured the Navara range to ensure you don't need to spend thousands on optional extras. The standard equipment levels are generous across the board.

IS THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X SAFE?
Safety is a major priority for modern ute buyers, especially families. The Navara does not disappoint, coming equipped with 8 airbags (including a vital front-centre airbag to prevent head clashes) and a massive suite of active driver assistance systems.
Standard Safety Equipment Highlights:
• Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
• Adaptive Cruise Control
• Blind-Spot Monitoring
• Front and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
• Lane-Keep Assist and Emergency Lane-Keep Assist
• Driver Attention Monitoring
• Traffic Sign Recognition
• Surround-View Camera (360-degree)
• Front and Rear Parking Sensors
• Trailer Sway Control
• Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
• Multi-Collision Braking
While the safety hardware is undeniably comprehensive, the real-world software calibration leaves a lot to be desired. The driver monitoring system is incredibly frustrating. It frequently beeps and flashes warnings at you if you simply glance away to check your side mirrors. Making matters worse, the system resets every time you turn the car off. If you want to disable it, you have to manually dig through several menus on the dashboard screen every single time you start the engine. It is a highly annoying quirk that Nissan desperately needs to fix via a software update.

HOW MUCH DOES THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X COST TO RUN?
Fuel efficiency is a critical factor for tradies and families racking up massive kilometres every year. Nissan officially claims a combined fuel economy figure of 7.7 L/100km for the Navara ST-X.
During our extensive road testing—which included heavy suburban traffic, highway cruising, and some light off-roading—the trip computer displayed a consistent average of 8.6 L/100km. Considering the vehicle weighs nearly 2.2 tonnes and runs a conventional diesel powertrain without any mild-hybrid trickery, this is actually a very respectable real-world figure. It matches the fuel efficiency you would expect from a 2.0-litre bi-turbo Ford Ranger or an Isuzu D-MAX under similar driving conditions.
The Navara is fitted with a large 75-litre fuel tank, which easily provides over 800 kilometres of highway touring range between fill-ups. Buyers should also note that this new engine requires AdBlue to meet strict emissions regulations. The vehicle features a 17-litre AdBlue tank, which will need occasional topping up between scheduled services.
When it comes to aftersales support, Nissan offers a truly outstanding warranty program. The Navara is covered by a massive 10-year / 300,000-kilometre conditional warranty. This provides incredible long-term peace of mind for buyers who plan on keeping their ute for a decade. Scheduled servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000 kilometres, which is the industry standard and perfectly manageable for most drivers.

YEECAR’S VERDICT ON THE 2026 NISSAN NAVARA ST-X
The 2026 Nissan Navara ST-X is an incredibly competent, highly practical dual-cab ute. By leaning heavily on the proven mechanical underpinnings of the Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan has delivered a vehicle that feels robust, capable, and ready for serious work.
The standout feature is undoubtedly the Premcar-tuned front suspension. It gives the Navara a noticeable edge in ride comfort over the Triton, making it a much more relaxing vehicle to live with on rough Australian city streets. Paired with the brilliant full-time 4WD system, the ST-X provides exceptional safety and traction in wet weather.
However, it isn't perfect. The 2.4-litre diesel engine is unrefined and noisy under heavy acceleration, the driver monitoring safety system is frustratingly sensitive, and the $63,177 starting price makes it a very expensive proposition. It lacks the cutting-edge tech of the BYD Shark 6 or the outright dynamic polish of the Ford Ranger.
But if you want a handsome, highly capable workhorse with traditional, easy-to-use physical buttons and the absolute peace of mind that comes with a 10-year warranty, the Navara ST-X remains a deeply sensible, reliable choice.
