It brings sharp exterior styling, a tech-heavy cabin, and a remarkably sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain to challenge the established guard head-on.

BYD has been on a massive roll across Australia, and this three-row SUV is their boldest statement yet. By fitting a massive 35.6kWh Blade battery to all-wheel-drive variants, the Sealion 8 delivers an official electric range of up to 152 kilometres. In everyday suburban life, that means you can run the daily school drop-offs and city commutes entirely on battery power without burning a single drop of petrol. When it’s time to head down the coast or into regional Australia, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine kicks in to provide over 1,000 kilometres of total touring range, eliminating charging stop anxiety completely.

On paper, it looks like the ultimate electrified family wagon for local buyers. We spent a week living with the top-tier Premium AWD model to see how it performs in the real world. HOW MUCH DOES THE 2026 BYD SEALION 8 COST?

When you are shopping for a full-sized family SUV, pricing is always a deciding factor. BYD has positioned the Sealion 8 aggressively to  undercut  key  rivals  like  the Toyota  Kluger  Hybrid,  delivering  a  significant  amount  of standard equipment for the money across three distinct variants.

The range kicks off with the Dynamic FWD at $56,990 before on-road costs. Even at this entry point, you get an impressive array of standard kit, including 20-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 15.6-inch touchscreen. It is priced directly against mid-spec mid-sizers while offering seven-seat practicality.

Stepping up to the Dynamic AWD costs an extra $7,000, landing at $63,990 before on-roads. For many Aussie families, this variant will be the absolute sweet spot of the lineup. The extra outlay buys you a second rear electric motor, a jump from 205kW to a blistering 359kW, a substantially larger 35.6kWh battery that extends EV range to 152km, upgraded 21-inch wheels, and intelligent DiSus-C adaptive damping suspension.

At the top of the range is the Premium AWD tested here, priced at $70,990 before on-road costs. While breaking into the $70k bracket puts it up against premium seven-seaters, it leaves nothing on the table. You gain genuine Nappa leather upholstery, second-row heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, an enormous 26-inch head-up display, and a 21-speaker DiSound audio system. WHAT IS THE 2026 BYD SEALION 8 LIKE ON THE INSIDE INCLUDING DIMENSION?

Climb inside the Sealion 8 and you are greeted by one of the most upscale interiors BYD has ever built. Gone are the wacky, guitar-string door pockets seen on earlier models.  Instead, the cabin  is  mature, contemporary, and solidly screwed together. The doors close with  a  reassuring,  heavy  thunk,  and  soft-touch  materials  cover  the dashboard, door tops, and center armrests.

Up front, the seats in our Premium test vehicle are trimmed in buttery Nappa leather. They offer excellent multi-way electric adjustment, active heating and ventilation, and pneumatic massage programs that work wonders on long highway stints. The chunky steering wheel feels great to hold, featuring clear physical buttons for cruise control and multimedia functions.  In the center sits a crisp  15.6-inch touchscreen running BYD's latest software. While this screen doesn't rotate like those in the Atto 3 or Seal, it is fast, responsive, and includes built-in Google Maps navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto. Dual wireless phone charging pads, large felt-lined door bins, and a deep central storage bin ensure family clutter is kept out of sight.

Dimensionally, the Sealion 8 has serious road presence. It stretches over five metres long and nearly two metres wide, providing a massive footprint that translates into excellent passenger room in the first two rows.

The second row is an absolute highlight for families. With a generous 2950mm wheelbase and a completely flat floorpan, there is an abundance of knee room, legroom, and headroom. The seats slide fore and aft on rails, recline generously, and in the  Premium grade, the outer seats get their own  heating, cooling, and  massage functions alongside dedicated digital climate controls. Three adults can sit abreast across the second row without shoulder- rubbing.

The third row is where the compromise lies. Accessing the rear requires tumbling the second row, which can be heavy and awkward to operate. Once back there, knee room and foot room are tight for adults, making it strictly an occasional space for kids or teenagers on short trips. On the plus side, the third row includes directional air vents, cupholders, and surprisingly, ISOFIX mounting points on both rearmost seats—a rare feature that big families with child seats will love.

Boot utility is well suited to family life. With all seven seats in use, there is 270 litres of space—enough for groceries or school bags. Drop the third row flat via manual levers and cargo room balloons to a massive 960 litres, easily swallowing prams and camping gear. Fold down the second row and you have a cavernous  1960-litre van-like cargo bay. Keep in mind that because of the rear electric motor and underfloor battery packaging, there is no spare tyre underneath, only an emergency puncture repair kit.

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET?

The engineering under the skin is what truly separates the Sealion 8 from traditional family crossovers. Every model uses a  1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder  petrol engine, but the battery sizes and electric motor outputs differ significantly between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive grades.

The entry-level  Dynamic  FWD  pairs the  1.5-litre turbo  engine with a single 200kW front electric  motor and a 19.0kWh battery, developing 205kW of combined power. That delivers a claimed 0-100km/h sprint of 8.6 seconds and 103km of electric range.

The Dynamic AWD and Premium AWD models take things to another level. They add an extra 200kW electric motor to the rear axle and step up to an enormous 35.6kWh Blade battery. Combined outputs rocket to 359kW of power and 675Nm of torque.  Despite tipping the scales at a hefty 2580kg, this dual-motor setup catapults the seven-seater from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds—faster than many hot hatches.

Charging is practical and flexible. The AWD models support DC fast charging up to 74kW, meaning you can top the battery from 30% to 80% in around half an hour at public fast chargers. At home, the 11kW AC onboard charger allows you to fully  replenish the battery overnight  in  roughly 3.5  hours  using a three-phase wallbox.  However, prospective buyers should note that braked towing capacity is limited to just 750kg across the entire range, which rules it out for heavy caravanning duties.

Urban Commuting & Refinement

Around town, the Sealion 8 operates primarily as an electric car. You glide away from intersections in near-total silence, with the instant torque from the electric motors providing clean, lag-free response. Forward and lateral sightlines are commanding thanks to the upright glasshouse, while the 360-degree camera system is one of the sharpest on the market, taking the stress out of parking in tight shopping center bays. Cabin sound deadening is excellent; wind and tyre noise are well suppressed, giving the SUV a serene, luxury-grade atmosphere at suburban speeds.

Ride Comfort & Handling Balance

Suspension comfort is clearly prioritized. The AWD variants come fitted with BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent damping system,  which  actively  monitors  road  surfaces  and  adjusts  the  dampers  in  milliseconds.  It  floats  over  road corrugations, potholes, and speed humps with ease, keeping occupants isolated from harsh impacts. However, that softer damping tune means you definitely feel the car's weight if you throw it into a roundabout or winding country corner with enthusiasm. There is noticeable body roll, and the flat seat squabs don't offer much lateral support when cornering quickly. This is an SUV designed for smooth family touring rather than apex-hunting.

Powertrain Punch & Braking Quirks

Straight-line acceleration in the AWD model is genuinely startling. Pin the throttle to overtake a road train on a regional highway, and both electric motors fire simultaneously alongside the turbo-petrol engine, pinning everyone back into their headrests. It delivers effortless overtaking punch regardless of how many passengers or bags are on board. The only notable dynamic flaw lies in the braking calibration. The pedal feels soft and spongy through the top of its travel as the system blends regenerative energy recovery with mechanical friction braking. It takes some acclimatization to stop smoothly in stop-and-go traffic.

The cost of running a large plug-in hybrid SUV comes down entirely to how often you plug it in. If you charge it regularly at home, the Sealion 8 will cost pennies to run compared to traditional petrol or diesel seven-seaters.

During our real-world evaluation in the AWD model, we achieved roughly 110 kilometres of pure electric driving on a full charge before the petrol engine fired up. That is an exceptional result for a heavy family vehicle, easily allowing owners to commute all week without visiting a petrol station. In mixed hybrid driving with charge in the battery, consumption hovered between 4.0L and 5.0L/100km.

However, when the battery is completely depleted, the small 1.5-litre turbo engine has to work hard to carry the vehicle's 2.6-tonne mass. On long freeway runs with a flat battery, fuel consumption climbed to around 8.0L/100km. It is still reasonable for a large seven-seater, but it highlights why having access to home charging is essential to unlock the true economic benefits of this vehicle.

If you are weighing up the lineup, the mid-spec Dynamic AWD ($63,990) represents the smartest buy. It gives you the big 35.6kWh battery, blistering 359kW twin-motor performance, and the adaptive DiSus-C suspension without stretching all the way to the $70k Premium grade.

It isn't flawless—the spongy brake pedal takes some getting used to, the third row is tight for adults, and the 750kg towing limit won't suit serious caravanners. But if you have off-street parking to charge overnight and want a luxurious, ultra-efficient seven-seater for the family commute, the Sealion 8 is a phenomenal package that demands a spot on your test-drive shortlist.
