The next-generation SUV will debut in the US as the Rogue Hybrid between September and November 2026, before reaching Australia approximately 12 months later.

Nissan Australia has confirmed that the next-generation T34-series Nissan X-Trail will arrive in local showrooms by the end of 2027, drastically cutting the historical lag time between left-hand drive and right-hand drive market launches.

The outgoing T33-series X-Trail arrived in Australia in late 2022, more than two years after its US-market 'Rogue' sibling. By transitioning to unified global vehicle platforms, Nissan intends to compress that delay by half for the incoming generation.

According to Nissan Oceania CEO Steve Milette, the new generation will skew heavily toward electrified powertrains. With hybrids already accounting for nearly 26 per cent of the broader Australian new-car market, Milette did not rule out the possibility of the next X-Trail launching as a hybrid-only proposition locally.

e-Power Hardware, Performance, and Efficiency

The US-market Rogue Hybrid previews the exact e-Power architecture destined for the incoming X-Trail. The system retains the concept of a series hybrid: a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine acts solely as an onboard generator to charge a 1.67kWh lithium-ion battery, which in turn powers the electric drive motors.

For the new generation, all-wheel-drive variants utilize a 149kW/329Nm front electric motor paired with a 99kW/195Nm rear electric motor. This delivers a combined total system output of 165kW—an 8kW increase over the current Australian-market X-Trail e-Power AWD.

The system incorporates a standard one-pedal driving mode, maximizing regenerative braking. Nissan USA claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 38mpg, which translates to approximately 6.2L/100km.

Cabin Technology and Active Safety

The T34 generation rides on a heavily updated version of the existing platform, featuring a more angular exterior design that abandons bright chrome in favor of dark metallic accents.

Inside, the cabin layout retains physical rocker switches for climate controls but introduces significantly larger display hardware. Entry grades utilize dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and digital instrument cluster, while flagship models upgrade to expansive 14.3-inch dual displays. The larger 14.3-inch system features Google Built-in, embedding native apps such as Google Maps and Google Gemini directly into the vehicle's interface.

Available Equipment Highlights (Based on US Specifications):

  • 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Head-up display and 64-colour ambient interior lighting
  • Power-adjustable front seats with memory, heating, and ventilation
  • Heated rear seats and a panoramic glass sunroof
  • Dual 15W wireless smartphone charging pads and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Space-saver spare wheel (optional on flagship grades)

The standard active safety suite includes autonomous emergency braking (with intersection assist and pedestrian/cyclist detection), active blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, and ProPilot Assist (adaptive cruise control with lane-centring). High-specification models add reverse AEB, a 3D surround-view camera with an 'invisible bonnet' mode, and Hands-Off Traffic Jam Support capable of autonomous lane changes at low speeds.

Current T33 Range Updates

Before the T34 arrives in late 2027, Nissan is expanding the current T33-series X-Trail lineup to maintain sales momentum. The brand will shortly introduce front-wheel-drive versions of the e-Power hybrid to capture fleet buyers and price-sensitive consumers, alongside a rugged, petrol-only 'Rock Creek' edition exclusive to the Australian market.

Local pricing and finalized seating configurations (including potential seven-seat e-Power variants) for the next-generation 2028 X-Trail will be announced closer to its Australian launch.
