Scheduled to commence Australian customer deliveries in September 2026, the updated model introduces radical structural changes, a modernized cabin, and a revised pricing structure.

BYD has officially pulled the covers off a heavily revised mid-life update for its popular electric SUV, now dubbed the 2026 BYD Atto 3 Evo.
The arrival of the Atto 3 Evo brings a highly unusual engineering strategy to the Australian passenger car market. In a rare move not seen in local SUV segments since the Volvo XC40 update in 2023, the Atto 3 will be sold simultaneously with two completely different drivetrain layouts: a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) base model and a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) flagship.
However, the entry cost of BYD ownership has risen. The previous sub-$40,000 'Essential' trim has been entirely discontinued. The range now opens at $41,990 before on-road costs for the Dynamic, topping out at $46,990 before on-roads for the Premium—representing a $2,000 price increase across both remaining grades compared to the outgoing lineup.

The Premium Grade: 800V Architecture and RWD Shift
The flagship Atto 3 Evo Premium receives the most radical transformation. Migrating to BYD's e-Platform 3.0, it abandons the front-wheel-drive layout for a traditional RWD configuration.
The Premium is powered by a new 230kW/380Nm rear electric motor paired with a larger 74.88kWh 'Blade' lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. While BYD’s press release enthusiastically compares its 5.5-second 0-100km/h sprint time to "homegrown Aussie V8 muscle cars", the true highlight is the electrical upgrade. The Premium adopts an 800V electrical architecture. This elevates maximum DC fast-charging to 220kW, allowing a 0 to 80 per cent charge in just 25 minutes. Claimed driving range has also stretched to 510km (WLTP).
For practicality, relocating the motor to the rear axle has freed up space under the bonnet, yielding a new 101-litre 'frunk' exclusively for the Premium grade. Braked towing capacity has also been doubled to a highly usable 1500kg. Rear boot capacity has slightly increased from 434 litres to 490 litres.

The Dynamic Grade: FWD Carryover with Added Value
The entry-level Atto 3 Evo Dynamic remains mechanically identical to the pre-update model. It retains a 400V architecture, a 60.48kWh LFP battery, and a 150kW/310Nm front-mounted electric motor. Driving range remains static at 420km (WLTP), with DC charging capped at 110kW (taking 41 minutes for a 0-80 per cent charge).
To offset the $2,000 price hike, BYD has trickled down equipment previously reserved for the older Premium models. The base Dynamic now comes standard with heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and an eight-speaker audio system. Both variants support 3.3kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability to power external appliances.

Design: Maturing the Cabin and Subtle Exterior Tweaks
Externally, the dimensions of the Atto 3 remain unchanged at 4455mm long and 1875mm wide. While physically smaller than the Leapmotor B10 (which is classed as a small SUV), the Atto 3 continues to compete in the VFACTS medium SUV segment. Visual updates are subtle, comprising a sharper front bumper, slimmer side skirts, full-width Chinese-knot LED tail lights, and model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels.
The most welcome changes occur inside. BYD has abandoned the polarizing two-tone blue and off-white interior with bold red highlights, replacing it with a much more subdued and mature grey colourway.
The bulky console-mounted gear shifter has been scrapped for a slim, steering-column-mounted stalk. This spatial reorganization allows the wireless phone charger to be relocated to a more accessible position, while its output has been vastly improved from 15W to 50W. A new 8.8-inch digital driver display replaces the tiny 5.0-inch unit across both grades, while the 15.6-inch central touchscreen runs BYD's latest, more responsive software interface.

Safety and Market Context
The Atto 3 Evo introduces a new Child Presence Detection (CPD) system utilizing cabin sensors to detect passengers left behind. The Premium variant gains active front cross-traffic assist and braking.
Despite being overtaken internally by the mid-size Sealion 7 as BYD's highest-volume local seller, the Atto 3 remains a dominant force, having delivered 3329 units to the end of July 2026—comfortably outpacing emerging rivals like the Leapmotor B10, Leapmotor C10, and Deepal S07.
