Pre-orders have officially opened in Australia for the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker, an all-new, all-electric crossover wagon scheduled for initial showroom arrivals in the second quarter of 2026.

Positioned as the battery-powered counterpart to the legendary petrol-driven Outback, the Trailseeker adopts a sleeker, low-slung, and more monolithic styling direction than the upright crossovers that currently dominate the family EV market.

Crucially for brand enthusiasts, the Trailseeker secures a major milestone by delivering a combined output of 280kW, enabling a claimed 0–100km/h sprint time of 4.5 seconds. This blinding acceleration officially crowning it as the fastest production vehicle Subaru has ever offered in the Australian market.

Dimensions vs. Weight

Co-developed alongside Toyota’s EV platforms, the Trailseeker rides on the dedicated e-Subaru Global Platform. Visually, it closely mirrors the footprint of a traditional rugged touring wagon, measuring 4845mm in length, 1860mm in width, and 1675mm in height. Compared to the current petrol Outback, the electric Trailseeker is 35mm shorter and 20mm narrower, but rides on a 105mm longer wheelbase (2850mm). This flat-floor architecture yields significantly more practical storage space, offering up to 609 litres of cargo capacity behind the rear bench compared to the Outback’s 530L.

However, the transition to electrification brings a substantial physical compromise: mass. The Trailseeker enters the market with a tare weight ranging between 2,040kg and 2,070kg—a major increase over its internal combustion engine (ICE) predecessor. To mitigate the dynamic effects of this weight, Subaru has deployed heavy-duty hot-stamped and high-tensile strength steel throughout the A and B pillars, roof lines, and side sills. This high-rigidity structure guarantees that suspension geometry remains true under hard cornering while providing reinforced physical shielding for the under-floor battery cell pack.

Symmetrical AWD and All-Terrain Intelligence

Despite its rapid straight-line performance, Subaru has engineered the Trailseeker to uphold its rally-bred rough-road credibility. The dual-motor Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is augmented by Driving Trajectory Prediction Control. This software continuously monitors steering input, yaw rate, and individual wheel speeds to calculate the driver's intended path, actively pre-positioning optimal torque across both axles before wheel slip or understeer can physically register.

For off-tarmac exploration, the vehicle boasts an adventure-ready 211mm of ground clearance and features standard Dual-Mode X-Mode with two dedicated traction settings: Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. This is supported by an integrated Grip Control function, which automatically regulates the vehicle’s low-speed crawling pace between 2 and 10km/h on rough paths, allowing the driver to concentrate solely on steering maneuvers through extreme terrain.

Battery Tech, Energy Efficiency, and V2L Capability

Powering the dual-motor drivetrain is a 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack manufactured by global supplier CATL.

Charging Metrics: Utilizing a standard public 150kW DC fast-charger, the Trailseeker replenishes its battery from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 30 minutes. Domestic home charging via a single-phase 7kW AC charger requires roughly 12 hours for a full 0–100 per cent replenishment.
Range Discrepancies: The entry-level Trailseeker AWD delivers a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 533km with an energy consumption rating of 15.4kWh/100km. However, buyers opting for the flagship Touring variant should note that its upgrade to larger 20-inch alloy wheels and additional onboard equipment drops the maximum WLTP driving range to 488km (consuming 16.8kWh/100km).

For remote utilities, the flagship AWD Touring is uniquely outfitted with a 220-volt, 1500-watt Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power outlet. This allow owners to run heavy external appliances—such as camping refrigerators, lighting systems, or power tools—directly off the car's high-voltage battery pack.

Premium Connectivity and Comprehensive Safety

The modern cockpit centers around a low-mounted 14-inch high-definition central touchscreen supporting cable-free smartphone mirroring via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driving telemetry is piped through a 7-inch LCD instrument cluster, complemented by a live camera-feed digital rear-view mirror that bypasses rear occupant obstructions. Dual wireless Qi chargers are also fitted standard to the central console.

Safety remains standard across the range via the Subaru Safety Sense platform, packing Pre-Collision Braking, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, and an Emergency Driving Stop System.
