Ending a five-year hiatus for the celebrated nameplate following the retirement of the fourth-generation model in 2021, the new Pajero also steps in to replace the Thai-built Pajero Sport, which was discontinued locally in 2025.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has officially released full pricing and local specifications for the reborn 2027 Mitsubishi Pajero. The fifth-generation large off-road SUV will begin arriving in Australian dealerships this December 2026.
While classic enthusiasts may remember the Mk3 and Mk4 Pajero for their unibody architectures with integrated frame rails, the 2027 model returns to a traditional body-on-frame ladder chassis. Built at Mitsubishi’s Laem Chabang facility in Thailand alongside the Triton ute, the new Pajero effectively bridges the gap between the utilitarian Pajero Sport and the premium large SUV segment.

Commercial Positioning: A $17k Price Leap
Offered across three grades—GLS, Exceed, and the flagship GSR—pricing kicks off at $68,490 before on-road costs for the entry-level five-seat GLS. A third row of seats adds $1,500 on the base model ($69,990 + ORCs), while the Exceed and GSR come standard as seven-seaters, topping out at $84,990 plus on-roads.
The new Pajero's $68,490 entry point represents an eye-watering $16,950 price jump over the base Pajero Sport ($51,540), and sits $13,500 above the old Mk4 Pajero GLX Final Edition sold in 2021 ($54,990).
While it strategically undercuts the Japanese-built Toyota LandCruiser Prado ($73,200), it is significantly more expensive than rival ute-based, Thai-built four-wheel drives, comfortably commanding a premium over the Isuzu MU-X ($49,900) and Australia’s segment-leader, the Ford Everest ($58,990).

Powertrain Breakdown: Euro 6d Diesel with 8-Speed Auto
Powering the 2027 Pajero is an upgraded version of the Triton’s 4N16 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Incorporating a variable-geometry turbocharger, water-cooled intercooler, dual-loop EGR, electric cooling fan, and an AdBlue exhaust treatment system (with a 17-litre AdBlue tank), the engine becomes Mitsubishi’s first Euro 6d-compliant diesel powertrain.
Outputs are rated at 150kW of power and 480Nm of torque—eclipsing the old Pajero Sport (133kW/430Nm) and the Mk4 Pajero's 3.2-litre diesel (141kW/441Nm).

Chassis & Drivetrain Differentiation from Triton
Unlike the Triton ute which uses a six-speed automatic and rear leaf springs, the Pajero gains significant mechanical upgrades:
- Transmission: Paired with an enhanced, lightweight eight-speed automatic transmission featuring a wider gear ratio spread for improved fuel economy and throttle response.
- Shortened Ladder Frame: The Triton chassis has been shortened by 260mm to a 2870mm wheelbase for superior off-road breakover angles, reinforced with thicker side members and heavy cross-bracing.
- Coil Suspension & Discs: Replaces rear leaf springs with a five-link 'torque-arm' live rear axle with coil springs for passenger comfort, while the rear drum brakes on the Triton are swapped for ventilated disc brakes.

- Super Select II 4WD: Retains Mitsubishi's class-leading system featuring 2H, 4H (full-time AWD usable on dry sealed bitumen), 4HLc (locked centre diff), and 4LLc (low range with locked centre diff), paired with an electronic rear differential lock and Active Yaw Control (AYC). Seven terrain modes are available: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock.
- Towing & Touring: Maximum braked towing capacity climbs to a full 3,500kg (a 400kg increase over the Pajero Sport), accompanied by standard Trailer Stability Assist and active Trailer Load Assist. Fuel tank capacity is rated at 80 litres.

Inside, second-row seats feature a 150mm sliding range to balance second- and third-row legroom. With the third row folded flat, boot capacity measures 519 litres (VDA), supplemented by an extra 10-litre underfloor storage compartment.
Heavy touring enthusiasts will appreciate the reinforced roof structure, which is officially rated for a 300kg static load (perfect for heavy rooftop tents when parked) and a 100kg dynamic load when cruising on regional highways.
Cabin Technology, Multi-Meter Gauges, and Yamaha Audio
The dashboard design adopts a clean, horizontal architecture anchored by large monolithic displays:
- GLS Grade: Features dual 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen, running wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Mitsubishi Connect telematics. Upholstery is durable, waterproof black fabric with grey stitching.
- Exceed & GSR Grades: Step up to dual 14.3-inch high-definition screens, an immersive 12-speaker Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate audio system with an 11-channel amplifier that actively compensates for cabin rain noise and air conditioning, a refrigerated centre console cool-box, and heated second-row seats.

- Classic Multi-Meter Revival: The digital instrument cluster includes a dedicated off-road screen that graphically recreates the iconic triple-gauge "Multi Meter" pods from the original Pajero—displaying a digital altimeter, compass, barometer, and live pitch/roll inclinometers.
- GSR Flagship Appointments: Adds ventilated front seats with memory, two-tone Camel and black leather trim, a black panoramic glass sunroof, a digital rear-view mirror, nanoe X air purification, and Dynamic Flow exterior LED animation.
Standard safety across all grades includes MiPilot (Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist), a 360-degree surround-view monitor with a transparent "bonnet see-through" trail camera, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear cross-traffic alert, rear AEB, and up to nine airbags (including front-centre and driver's knee airbags).
