The new entry-level EQS400 RWD is priced from $184,900 before on-road costs, representing a massive $35,000 price cut compared to the outgoing all-wheel-drive EQS450.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed local pricing and specifications for the heavily updated 2027 EQS Sedan. Arriving in showrooms this September, the refreshed electric limousine transitions to a new 800-volt architecture, standardises the massive 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, and introduces controversial "steer-by-wire" technology as an option.

The Range Benchmark: Australia's Longest-Range EV
The new EQS400 now claims the title of Australia’s longest-range electric vehicle. Thanks to a larger 112kWh (usable) battery pack, revised cell chemistry, and an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.20Cd, it achieves a WLTP-certified driving range of 810km.
This represents a significant leap over the previous model's 698km ADR range, and edges out the BMW iX3 (805km) and Tesla Model 3 Premium Long Range RWD (750km), while matching the upcoming 2027 Volvo EX60 P12 (810km).

Powertrain Realities: Single Motor & Two-Speed Transmission
To achieve the $35,000 price reduction and 810km range, Mercedes-Benz has shifted the base EQS from dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) to a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout.
- The Power Trade-off: The new rear-mounted motor produces 270kW of power and 505Nm of torque. While power is up 5kW over the old EQS450, torque drops significantly by 295Nm. Consequently, the 0-100km/h sprint extends from 5.6 seconds to 6.2 seconds.

- Two-Speed Gearbox: To optimize efficiency, the EQS400 features a new two-speed rear transmission. First gear provides rapid acceleration from a standstill, while the taller second gear maximizes cruising range at higher speeds, lowering energy consumption to an official 18.4 kWh/100km.
- 800V Ultra-Fast Charging: The transition to an 800-volt electrical system boosts peak DC fast-charging capacity from 200kW to 350kW. Under optimal conditions, this allows drivers to add up to 320km of range in approximately 10 minutes.

Cabin Tech, Air Suspension, and "Steer-By-Wire"
Visually, the 2027 EQS gains a statelier front fascia with a reshaped bonnet featuring power domes, additional chrome accents, and an illuminated star-pattern grille connecting it closer to the traditional S-Class aesthetic.
Standard equipment is extensive, featuring Airmatic air suspension with adaptive damping. The suspension utilizes cloud-based Car-to-X data to detect upcoming road irregularities, preemptively adjusting the dampers before reaching speed bumps. The cabin is dominated by the standard 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen and a 15-speaker, 710W Burmester 3D surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos.
For $7,500, buyers can option a steer-by-wire system paired with a flattened "yoke-style" steering wheel. As the first German production car to offer this, it completely removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels, relying entirely on electronic control to reduce steering effort. It operates in tandem with the standard rear-axle steering (which turns the rear wheels by up to 10 degrees) for maximum low-speed agility. Buyers who stick to the standard electromechanical steering will retain a traditional wheel featuring the return of physical rocker and roller controls.
