While Chery states the Lepas name is a portmanteau of ‘leopard’ and ‘passion’ (which inspired the feline-like LED headlight design), the L6 EV is known in its domestic Chinese market as the Chery Fulwin T7.

The aggressive expansion of the Chery Group in Australia continues with the official introduction of its newest sub-brand, Lepas. Set to make its public debut at the Everything Electric expo in Sydney (September 18-20), the brand will launch locally in October 2026 with its inaugural model: the Lepas L6 EV mid-size electric SUV.

The Lepas L6 EV enters the hyper-competitive mid-size electric SUV segment heavily armed with standard luxury technology. It will compete directly against the similarly sized Geely EX5 and the BYD Atto 3, acting as a larger, more premium alternative to Chery's own E5 and the Jaecoo J5 EV.

Powertrain, LFP Battery, and 440km Touring Range

Underpinned by the newly developed LEX platform—an architecture designed to accommodate both fully electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains—the L6 EV is configured exclusively with front-wheel drive for the Australian market.

Propulsion is handled by a single front-mounted electric motor generating 160kW of power and 275Nm of torque. Energy is supplied by a 65kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack.

Under the WLTP testing cycle, the L6 EV claims a driving range of 440km and an energy consumption rate of 17.5kWh/100km.

Lepas has not yet confirmed the vehicle's maximum DC charging capacity in kW. However, official documents state the L6 EV requires approximately 22 minutes to charge from 30 to 80 per cent using a DC fast-charger (Note: Most manufacturers quote 10–80% times; the 30–80% metric suggests the L6 EV utilizes a moderate, battery-preserving charging curve).

Dimensions and Localized Chassis Testing

Measuring 4570mm long, 1852mm wide, and 1694mm tall on a 2700mm wheelbase, the L6 EV is dimensionally identical to the Geely EX5 (which sits on a slightly longer 2750mm wheelbase).

Crucially for Australian buyers, Lepas confirmed it has conducted an extensive local testing and adaptation program ahead of the October launch. Prototype vehicles logged thousands of kilometres across challenging Australian roads to specifically fine-tune the suspension hardware, HVAC air-conditioning performance, and the calibration of the active safety systems for local lane markings.

Cabin Technology, Sony Audio, and Automated Parking

Inside, the Lepas L6 EV leans heavily into digital connectivity and premium appointments. The dashboard is dominated by a 13.2-inch central touchscreen offering wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and the "Hello LEPAS" intelligent voice command system. Driver telemetry is handled by a secondary 8.88-inch LCD digital instrument cluster.

Standard comfort and convenience equipment confirmed for Australia includes:

  • Synthetic leather upholstery with heated and ventilated front seats.
  • An 8-speaker Sony premium sound system.
  • A panoramic glass sunroof with power sunshade.
  • A 50W high-speed wireless smartphone charging pad.
  • 19-inch machined-finish alloy wheels, puddle lights, and a power tailgate.

Advanced Automated Parking & Safety Suite The L6 EV differentiates itself with advanced parking hardware. It comes standard with Automatic Parking Assist (APA), capable of steering the vehicle into parallel, perpendicular, and reverse parking spaces with minimal driver intervention. It also features Remote Parking Assist (RPA) and a 360-degree Around View Monitor providing centimetre-level distance readouts.

Occupant protection includes seven airbags and a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Departure Prevention.

2027 Lepas L6 EV Australian Pricing & Availability

Pricing and finalized showroom specifications will be announced by Lepas Australia closer to the vehicle's official launch in October 2026.

(Note: Based on the 65kWh battery size and the vehicle's dimensional footprint relative to the Chery Omoda E5 and Geely EX5, industry expectations suggest the Lepas L6 EV will likely target the highly competitive $45,000 to $55,000 pricing corridor.)

The broader Lepas global strategy will see the brand expand to include a full family of vehicles, with the L6 EV eventually to be bookended by a smaller L4, a larger L8, and a flagship L9 SUV.
