Australia’s mid-size family SUV market has become an electrified battleground.  Buyers across the country are queuing up for hybrid badges to slash their fuel bills, but plug-in hybrids have traditionally carried hefty price tags well beyond the reach of average families. Great Wall Motor wants to change that narrative completely with the 2026 GWM Haval H6 Ultra PHEV. Arriving with a sharp drive-away price tag, this flagship variant bundles twin electric motors, all-wheel drive, and a big battery into a familiar, spacious family silhouette.

Under the skin, the H6 Ultra PHEV packs a massive mechanical punch. Pairing a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with front and rear electric motors, it delivers an enormous 268kW of power and 760Nm of torque. That is sports car muscle in a practical family wagon. Equipped with a 19.09kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, it promises an official 100km of pure electric driving range, letting suburban owners tackle the daily school run and work commute without burning a drop of fuel.

Priced at $50,990 drive-away, the H6 Ultra PHEV undercuts its upcoming Japanese plug-in competition by tens of thousands of dollars. But big power and sharp pricing on paper don't always translate into a class-leading driving experience. Can this Chinese plug-in hybrid match the driving polish, seamless hybrid integration, and long-term resale value of the established hybrid benchmarks? In this comprehensive YEECAR 3.0 review, we dive into its pricing,  real-world  electric  efficiency,  cabin  packaging,  and  road  manners  to  see  if  it  deserves  a  spot  in  your driveway.

Pricing  is  GWM's  strongest  weapon  in  Australia,  and  the  Haval  H6  range  offers  a  broad  selection  spanning traditional petrol power, self-charging hybrids, and dedicated plug-in hybrid flagships. Best of all, GWM backs the entire  lineup  with  national  drive-away  pricing,  meaning  no  hidden  dealer  delivery  charges  or  nasty  on-road surprises.

The standard petrol range starts at an accessible $35,990 drive-away for the Lux 2.0T FWD. The self-charging hybrid range opens at $40,990 drive-away, offering traditional hybrid simplicity without the need to plug in. For buyers wanting plug-in capability, the lineup starts at $44,990 drive-away for the Lux PHEV FWD.

The model on test here is the flagship Haval H6 Ultra PHEV AWD, priced at $50,990 drive-away. Spending the extra cash over the front-drive Lux PHEV buys you a massive performance upgrade. You gain a dedicated rear electric motor, turning the car into an all-wheel-drive powerhouse with 268kW and 760Nm. You also pick up the full Ultra equipment roster, including a panoramic glass sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, front parking sensors, and an upgraded sound system. In terms of metal, power, and equipment per dollar, it is one of the most aggressively priced mid-size SUVs in Australia.

WHAT IS THE 2026 HAVAL H6 ULTRA PHEV PLUG-IN HYBRID LIKE ON THE INSIDE INCLUDING DIMENSION?

Step inside the H6 Ultra PHEV, and you will notice an interior that feels significantly more modern than earlier iterations. GWM has revised the center console, upgraded the digital displays, and swapped in a much thicker, sportier two-spoke steering wheel that feels great in the hands.

Material  presentation  is  generally  good,  though  with   a   few  cost-conscious  touches.   Soft-touch  padding  is generously applied across the upper dashboard, the front door cards, and the central armrest where your elbows rest. However, harder, scratchier plastics remain on the lower door bins and transmission tunnel. The seats are wrapped in leatherette upholstery with contrast stitching. In the Ultra, the driver gets power lumbar support and memory presets, and both front seats feature three-stage heating and ventilation. However, the front seat squabs are on the shorter side and lack under-thigh extension, which can make settling in for a long three-hour interstate drive slightly fatiguing for taller drivers.

The dashboard is dominated by an enormous 14.6-inch central touchscreen paired with a 10.25-inch digital driver instrument cluster and a crisp head-up display. The multimedia display is bright and fast, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay,  wireless  Android  Auto,   and   built-in  satellite  navigation.  However,  GWM  has  committed  heavily  to minimalism by relocating nearly every physical control into the screen. Adjusting the air conditioning temperature, fan  speed,  seat  heating,  or  switching  drive  modes  requires  tapping  through  on-screen  menus,  which  can  be distracting while driving over choppy roads. Fortunately, the steering wheel includes customizable shortcut buttons, and the natural voice control system handles basic cabin commands reliably.

Dimensions, Passenger Space, and Practicality

The Haval H6 sits at the larger end of the mid-size SUV class, providing a roomy cabin that easily accommodates busy family life.

Dimension Metric2026 GWM Haval H6 Specification
Overall Exterior Length4703mm
Overall Exterior Width (excl. mirrors)1886mm
Overall Exterior Height1730mm
Wheelbase Length2738mm
Boot Cargo Capacity (Seats Upright)560 Litres
Maximum Cargo Capacity (Seats Folded)1445 Litres
Kerb Weight1980kg

Second-row passenger room is a massive strong point. With a generous 2738mm wheelbase, adults sitting in the back enjoy excellent knee room and toe room, while the tall roofline ensures plenty of headroom even with the panoramic sunroof fitted. Because this is the AWD model, there is a small transmission tunnel hump in the floor, but the cabin width is generous enough to carry three teenagers across the rear bench without excessive squeezing. Rear occupants get directional air vents, USB-A and USB-C charging points, map pockets, and a fold-down center armrest with cupholders.

Boot utility is well-judged for daily family duties. The hands-free power tailgate opens to reveal 560 litres of luggage space with all seats in place, easily accommodating a full-sized pram and grocery shopping. Folding the 60/40-split rear seats expands cargo room to 1445 litres. However, packaging the high-voltage battery and rear electric motor underneath  means  there  is  no  spare  wheel  beneath  the  boot  floor.  Instead,  you  get  a  tyre  inflator  kit,  which Australian buyers heading out onto regional gravel roads need to keep in mind.

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET?

The powertrain of the  Haval  H6  Ultra  PHEV  AWD  is a  highly complex,  high-output setup that delivers serious mechanical muscle on paper.

The combustion heart is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW and 240Nm. It works alongside an 80kW/170Nm front electric motor and a potent 150kW/350Nm electric motor on the rear axle. When everything operates in harmony, the system generates an enormous 268kW of power and 760Nm of torque. Power is managed via a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). GWM claims a blisteringly quick 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.8 seconds, making it one of the quickest family SUVs in its price bracket.

The 19.09kWh LFP battery provides an official ADR electric driving range of 100km. When it comes to charging, the H6 PHEV offers great versatility. At home, the 6.6kW AC onboard charger tops up the battery in roughly three to four hours. Unlike many plug-in hybrids that omit fast charging, the H6 supports 34kW DC fast charging, allowing you to top up from 30% to 80% in around 25 minutes at public charging stations. Towing capacity is rated at 1500kg braked, which is adequate for small camper trailers or jet skis.

HOW DOES THE 2026 HAVAL H6 ULTRA PHEV PLUG-IN HYBRID DRIVE?

Out on Australian roads, the 2026 Haval H6 Ultra PHEV AWD is a mixed bag: immensely fast and much more comfortable than previous models, but still in need of software calibration refinement.

Urban Commuting in Pure EV Mode

Around town with a charged battery, the H6 is remarkably quiet and pleasant. The twin electric motors move its 1980kg kerb weight with effortless ease. Leaving intersections is smooth, silent, and brisk, with the car operating purely on electricity up to highway speeds. Forward visibility over the high, squared-off bonnet is good, while the 360-degree  camera  with  transparent  chassis  view   makes  parking   in  tight  shopping  center  car   parks  very manageable.

One  major  improvement  on  this   updated  model  is  the   suspension  tuning.   GWM  conducted  local  chassis development at Australia's Lang Lang proving ground, fitting softer shock absorbers and revised spring rates. As a result, the H6 rides noticeably better than older models. It filters out high-frequency road corrugations, sharp bridge expansion joints, and suburban potholes with far greater composure, eliminating the harsh, brittle crash that used to plague the chassis.

Straight-Line Speed & Drivetrain Clunkiness

Where the H6 will put a massive smile on your face is sheer straight-line acceleration. Put your foot down hard to merge onto a highway, and the 268kW powertrain unleashes immense forward thrust. With electric motors driving both axles, there is zero front-wheel wheelspin or torque steer. It genuinely pins you back into the seat, sprinting with hot-hatch urgency.

However, the integration between the petrol engine, twin electric motors, and the two-speed hybrid transmission lacks mechanical polish. When you demand sudden power mid-corner or in stop-start traffic, the powertrain can hesitate for a second before surging forward abruptly. The throttle mapping can feel twitchy and uneven. Similarly, the brake pedal feels spongy through the first portion of its travel as the computer juggles regenerative electric braking and physical friction pads. It takes time to learn to brake smoothly without causing passengers' heads to bob.

Handling and Safety Tech Polish

Through corners, the softer suspension tune means there is noticeable body roll if you push hard through sweeping country bends. The steering is light and accurate for city driving, but lacks road feel. On regional freeways at 110km/h,  wind  noise  around  the  side  mirrors  is  well  contained,  and  tyre  roar  over  coarse-chip  bitumen  is respectable. GWM has also dialed back the sensitivity of its active safety electronics; the driver fatigue camera and lane-keep assist intervene with far fewer annoying chimes than earlier Haval models, making long-distance cruising much more relaxed.

GWM has packed the Haval H6 lineup with an exceptional level of standard kit, ensuring buyers don't have to spend extra money on optional packages.

IS THE 2026 HAVAL H6 ULTRA PHEV PLUG-IN HYBRID SAFE?

Safety is a major priority for family buyers, and the GWM Haval H6 carries a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating based on testing conducted in 2022, which applies across all engine variants.

Standard Safety Equipment Highlights:

The active driver assists operate effectively on the highway, maintaining steady following distances and keeping the vehicle  centered  within  marked  lanes  without  bouncing  between  lane  lines.  The  surround-view  camera  with transparent chassis rendering is particularly helpful for avoiding low kerbs in tight suburban car parks.

HOW MUCH DOES THE 2026 HAVAL H6 ULTRA PHEV PLUG-IN HYBRID COST TO RUN?

Running  costs for the  H6  Ultra  PHEV  depend  heavily  on  how  often  you  plug  it  in at  home.  If  you  charge  it consistently, daily commuting costs are remarkably low.

Running Cost ParameterOfficial Claimed RatingReal-World Tested Performance
Pure Electric Driving Range100 km (ADR 81/02)~85 km (Real-World Suburban Driving)
Fuel Economy (Charged Battery)1.1 L/100km2.0 – 2.5 L/100km (Mixed Commuting)

Fuel Tank Capacity55 LitresOver 800 km Combined Touring Range
Fuel Requirement91 RON Regular UnleadedBudget-Friendly Regular Unleaded

GWM claims an official electric range of  100km.  In  real-world Australian suburban driving with air conditioning running, you can expect around 85 kilometres of pure electric driving on a full charge. That is more than enough to handle two typical days of suburban errands without burning petrol. When operating in hybrid mode with a depleted battery, our testing returned an average of 6.2L/100km. While slightly above GWM's 5.5L/100km low- battery claim, it is still a very respectable figure for a 2.0-tonne AWD wagon. Better yet, the engine runs on cheap 91 RON regular unleaded petrol, saving money over European rivals that mandate premium 95 or 98 fuel.

Warranty Coverage and Scheduled Servicing

GWM provides a comprehensive factory ownership program to build long-term confidence:

• Vehicle Warranty: 7 Years / Unlimited Kilometres (Capped at 150,000km for commercial/rideshare use)

• High-Voltage Battery Warranty: 8 Years / Unlimited Kilometres

• Roadside Assistance: 5 Years Complimentary

• Service Intervals: 12 Months or 15,000 Kilometres

• 5-Year Capped-Price Servicing: $2,140 Total ($428 average per service)

Service intervals are set at 12 months or 15,000km. Over the first five years, capped-price servicing totals $2,140, averaging  out  to  an  affordable  $428  per  visit.  This  transparent  pricing  structure  keeps  routine  maintenance predictable throughout ownership.

YEECAR'S VERDICT ON THE 2026 HAVAL H6 ULTRA PHEV

The 2026 GWM Haval H6 Ultra PHEVAWD is a formidable value proposition. For $50,990 drive-away, you get 268kW of twin-motor all-wheel-drive performance, a genuine 85km of real-world electric driving range, and a massive list of luxury equipment that would cost over $70,000 from established Japanese or European brands. The locally tuned suspension has greatly improved ride comfort, making it a much more pleasant daily cruiser.

However, you must accept some trade-offs. The drivetrain lacks the seamless mechanical polish of the best hybrid systems, the throttle can feel jerky, the touchscreen-heavy climate controls are distracting, and you miss out on a spare tyre. Furthermore, long-term resale value remains an unproven factor compared to Toyota.

If you have off-street parking to charge every night and want blistering straight-line performance, rock-bottom daily commuting costs, and unmatched equipment per dollar, the Haval H6 Ultra PHEVAWD delivers unbeatable showroom value that demands a test drive.
