How long does it take to charge an electric car

How long does it take to charge an electric car?
The short answer
Charging times vary — from as little as 20–30 minutes at a rapid charger to over 40 hours using a standard household socket. The exact time depends on your car’s battery size and the type of charger you use.
What determines charging time?
- Battery size: Measured in kWh, like the size of a fuel tank. Larger batteries take longer to fill.
- Charger speed: Measured in kW, similar to how fast petrol flows at the pump. More power = faster charging.
- Car capability: Not every EV can take full advantage of ultra-rapid chargers — your car sets its own maximum rate.
Example: A 100kWh battery on a 150kW charger = ~40 minutes. On a 50kW charger = ~2 hours. On a 2.3kW household plug = ~43 hours.
Charging at home
- Dedicated wallbox (most common): Typically 7kW, enough to recharge overnight.
- Three-phase wallbox (up to 22kW): Faster, but requires costly three-phase power.
- Household socket: Possible, but slow (often 1–2 days for a full charge) and not recommended for safety reasons.
Tip: Budget $1,000–$2,000 for wallbox installation; some carmakers subsidise this.
Public charging points
- Found in shopping centres, town hubs, car parks, and service stations.
- 7–22kW AC chargers: Add 20–40 km of range per hour.
- Apps & networks: Most providers offer apps to check availability, pricing, and to activate charging.
- Workplace charging is growing, sometimes subsidised by government grants.
Rapid charging
- 50kW chargers: 0–80% in under 1 hour.
- 150kW chargers: 0–80% in 20–30 minutes.
- Even faster chargers (250kW+) are arriving, but only certain EVs can use them.
- Note: Plug-in hybrids usually don’t support rapid charging.
Tesla Superchargers
- Australia has hundreds of Tesla Superchargers, now gradually opening to non-Tesla EVs.
- Latest V3 chargers deliver up to 250kW, adding ~240 km of range in just 10 minutes (vehicle-dependent).
- Tesla’s app and in-car navigation make it easy to locate and plan charging stops.
