While the standard Mercedes-Benz S-Class arrives in November 2026, the ultra-luxury Maybach flagship lineup will land in Australian showrooms during the first quarter (January to March) of 2027.

The arrival of the V8-powered S580 represents a major strategic repositioning for Maybach Down Under. Previously, local buyers were limited exclusively to the twelve-cylinder S680. The new S580 lowers the entry ticket to the Maybach badge by $64,528, while the flagship Maybach S680 4Matic climbs $5,828 to $582,428 before on-roads.

Powertrain Overhaul: The Flat-Plane V8 vs. Handcrafted V12

The updated Maybach lineup presents a choice between two high-output powertrains paired with 4Matic all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission:

• Mercedes-Maybach S580 4Matic (4.0L Twin-Turbo V8): Powered by the new-generation 'M177 Evo' 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (shared with the standard S-Class and related to engines powering Aston Martin's DB12 and DBX). Despite the V12 boasting an extra four cylinders, 68kW more power, and 150Nm more torque, Mercedes-Maybach claims an identical 0–100km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds for both the S580 and S680. The substantial $64k price premium for the V12 S680 purchases supreme acoustic refinement, effortless high-speed reserves, and ultimate prestige rather than outright acceleration gains.

Intelligent Chassis Dynamics: Predictive Suspension & Self-Righting Wheels

To isolate occupants from road imperfections, the Maybach S580 comes standard with E-Active Body Control active suspension.

Utilizing Car-to-X cloud communication, the vehicle records the GPS coordinates of speed bumps and road irregularities detected by onboard sensors, storing them in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud for up to 14 days. When another equipped vehicle approaches that location, the suspension proactively primes its dampers to glide over the obstacle.

Both models feature 4.5-degree rear-axle steering as standard (with a 10-degree system optional) to significantly shrink the turning circle of this 5.48-metre-long stretched limousine.

Both variants ride on bespoke 20-inch Maybach forged wheels equipped with a weighted ball-bearing hub mechanism that keeps the central Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star perfectly upright at all times while driving.

Exterior Redesign and 600m Micro-LED Digital Lights

Measuring 5484mm in overall length (14mm longer due to restyled front and rear aprons), the 2027 Maybach features a commanding front grille that is 20 per cent larger than before, integrating a subtly illuminated MAYBACH script into the upper chrome surround.
